LawWare, Inc. was formed in 1991 by attorneys Chuck Hanson and Richard Holmes. What began in the late 1980's as an effort to speed the creation of documents of a routine nature, became the foundation for today's version of LawWare™, the Windows-based document assembly and document management program.
Prior to the advent of Microsoft Windows, Hanson and Holmes used a DOS shareware merge program to generate documents. Soon the firm's other three attorneys concurred that the antiquated method of finding an old form, scratching out changes, and having a secretary type it was both time consuming and prone to error. Similarly, locating old forms and dictating to a secretary was also slow, cumbersome, and an expensive way to produce routine documents. The merge system dramatically reduced the time required to produce quality first-draft documents and thus freed support staff to focus on more productive work. The timesavings were immeasurable.
In 1991 several attorneys visiting the office marveled at the new document assembly process and suggested that it be made available to others. Chuck and Richard formed LawWare, Inc. and after considerable work, a beta version was developed. Beta versions of the software were tested by Chuck, Richard, the firm, and their friends. Word of mouth was the initial marketing effort as friends told other attorneys and prospective customers called to inquire about availability. LawWare™ programs were sold with little or no effort. LawWare, Inc. provided yearly updates based upon statutory and case law changes and began selling updates to the program in 1992. LawWare, Inc. continued to sell and update the DOS version until Y2K issues prompted a shutdown of activities. Attempts at creating a Windows version of LawWare™ were initially frustrating.
In 2001, qualified technical developers were finally located and hired to produce a Windows version deserving of the LawWare™ name. A beta version was written and tested in early 2002 and was very well received by the test group. After many long months of programming and testing, LawWare™ for Windows was released in April 2002 with updates, program enhancements, and new documents released soon thereafter. We are looking forward to a long and prosperous future for LawWare™ and for those who benefit from using it in their practice.
